So I was checking around Gainesville for a farming job that would let
me both get experience and stay in or near town. I made it to the
Blueberry Farm, but the guy in charge wasn't there and one of the other
farmers suggested that they weren't really in need of extra hands
around the place. I was somewhat bummed but went up to the Catholic Worker House
to see if they had any other leads. I talked to the head of the place,
Johnny, and he suggested a few farms outside of town and then got this
funny look on his face. He told me to arrange a meeting with him later
that week -- he had a proposition.
Tonight I talked to him. There are two programs he has in mind, but one
involves a bit more commitment than I think I'm willing to give right
now. The second sounds exactly up my alley. I would be a live-in
volunteer at the House and get free room and board. My
responsibilities would be two "house days" per week. Essentially,
from 7am til 10pm I take care of the place. Given that this place
has a lot of guests and phone calls and donations, it could be pretty
hectic, and random craziness could occur, or it could be a really
really quiet time for reading. (I like that part) I would also
take part in many of the projects the house participates in; namely
Breakfast Brigade (bringing food to early-morning day laborers), school
gardens (teaching kids to play in the dirt and grow things) and
Dorothy's Cafe (hosting dinner for low- or no-income Gainesville
residents). On the side I would work part-time for the Blueberry
Farm, getting some experience, and for... wherever else will take me,
for the money I'll need to pay off student loans and medical insurance
and cell phone bills and the like.
So... That's my idea. What do you people think? It
won't be glamorous. It won't be easy. But hopefully it'll
be what I'm looking for -- only better! Thanks again, guys!

You said a while back that God was going to get your disappointment with microbiology, flip it around, and make it work out for you. Well, my friend, God has no doubt made it work out in very, very huge ways that are oh so characteristic of Him.
Consider yourself blessed beyond knowing.

There was a farmer had a dog, and Bengi was his name-o...
I would do better, but I have a three hour final ahead of me tomorrow morning and children songs and show tunes are about the best you can hope for right now.
Polygamous Ben, the polygamous little monkey...

Hey, I got inspired by a gal that came in today and was on her way (at 45, with her 4.5 year old son and her husband) to volunteer with www.villagevolunteers.org . Really inspired. I may go in about 4 months. :-) I'll tell you about my experience the next time I talk to you, but check out the farming stuff- sounds cool.
